MEXICO HERE I COME

Big news, you guys.....

I'VE BEEN INVITED TO MY FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION!!!!!!!!!

I applied with a couple I really like and we were accepted as delegates to Mexico City, Mexico.  Never been there before.  October 31-November 2.  We've already got our tickets and hotel booked and are waiting for the branch to tell us our options about activities before and after the convention.

I know a little about Mexico just from listening to all my Mexican friends from my old congregation in Memphis (shout out, Summer Spanish!) and there are certain things I really miss about my Little Mexico neighborhood I used to live in that I'm excited to repeat.  Let's be honest, mainly food items...you know me too well.

So I need help!  Gift ideas for a budget?  Packing tips?  Ahhhhhh!  My mind is literally racing thinking about it.

  1. Awesome sis! A sister in a hall we visited came up to me & gave me a bookmark she made from scrap booking materials with a nice thought on it. She said she gives one to each sister who's husband gives a talk there. It fits on the corner of the page & I use it to mark where I am in my notebook. Kind of like these, but simple, but pretty http://www.pinterest.com/marteczka/creating-corner-bookmarks/ I made a note to self of how simple it was, but sweet too. Don't know if it is helpful.

  2. I love bookmarks also, I actually collect them, although reading is one of my favorite pastimes so I do use my bookmarks. I also had a sister at a D.C. come up to me and give me a bookmark. She made them for just that purpose to give to the friends. I have also told my friends when they vacation don't try to think of a gift for me, just bring me a bookmark. Something else I collect are potholders. A couple from our hall when they attended an International Convention in Italy, brought me back a potholder. It has front row in my collection of potholders. Another sister from Jamaica gave me a necklace she made out of different kinds of seeds, it is very lovely. I treasure them all, so I'm sure whatever you decide the friends will treasure them always.

BTW, CONGRATULATIONS, enjoy your visit to Mexico....

  3. AWESOME!!!!!! Do you know Veronica Iglesias from Vista Alegre? She's been accepted to Mexico too. Exciting stuff!!! Both times we've gone to an International we've made magnets. I like them because everyone always has room for another magnet on the fridge, usually, and they're small and you see it every day instead of something you stick in a drawer! The first time we made them with business card sheets, then laminated them, and stuck magnet tape on the back. The second time we just had them made at Vistaprint. Nice thing is that if you want, you can put your contact info on the back of a homemade one. Speaking of which, have some kind of business cards with your picture and contact info.

  4. How exciting!!! All these are excellent suggestions. I was thinking what I would like to receive, the business card idea with a picture is good - perhaps expand it into a post card with a picture of you in the field. I'm always interested in everyone elses territory so its a nice reminder and you could have a scripture on the front with your details on the back and a magnet stuck on the back so they can see it everyday on their fridge. I guess just depends how much you can spend but VISTAPrint is cheap....
We are all excited for our international in Melbourne Australia which is 17th-19th Oct

  5. Hi Shawn, been thinking about this all week. What about bringing something that represents where you are serving. I know a sister who is in Mexico & will be attending the International DC in Texas. Mexico is known for leather & shoes. So she is making leather shoe key rings & putting their info on stickers of the sole of shoes. Also bringing leather bracelets. So what's popular there that's inexpensive? A couple from where I live just got back from Myanmar. They bought little jewelry bags online that has a ribbon to close it. They put candy & vista print cards with their info, where they serve & how to reach them. I think a postcard w/ur pic is a fantastic idea. Maybe put a recipe on one side & your info on another! I bet you are going to have a great time! When I see the videos (btw please post one on ur blog with you at DC!!!!) on jw.org of the international DC's, it brings tears to my eyes. Thanks for always being such an encouragement to me. I haven't figured out yet how to post this with out putting anonymous :( Love to you Sis~Colline

    1. Colline, THIS IS MY FAVORITE IDEA!!! Yes, I know I'm screaming. Putting a recipe + my contact info is soooooo me! Ladies and gentlemen, I think we've found a winner. Now I just have to figure out how to get these Vistaprint things to Nicaragua before October.

    1. Oh, sorry. DF is Distrito Federal. It's the Spanish name for Mexico City. I was gonna force you into helping me anyway even if you didn't offer :)

  7. Yayyyy... I'm super excited for you, I would love to visit Mexico one day. I love the Magnet idea with your info at the back of them. By the way, Shelina DF means Distrito Federal and she loves it because she's never been there and she gets excited about places and stuff she hasn't experienced just yet. It's kinda awesome to be in a place so far from home u have never been. Love u both!
